Lucas and his companies actively preserve flaky old FILM that is turning to dust ... that is part of the drive behind THX.
Nothing lasts forever.
Lucas may not be the best director around but he is passionate about film, of that I have no doubt.
He is also passionate about giving kids an education (LucasLearning) although that arm of things doesn't seem to exist here in the UK.
I'm the first to get cynical about the release after release of the Star Wars films (VHS, Widescreen, THX sound, THX vision, Special Editions). But can you blame him when it enables him to get his films out there once more, to a new audience??
I personally believe that Lucas has done loads for the indie film-maker ... simply because he knows the value of a good mentor, and still regards himself as independant ... after all, it is now Hollywood that come to him.
Anways, I'll shut up before I start sound like a saddo ... uh ... too late!!!

The thing about Star Wars is interesting--It is even more interesting when you think about how Lucas is not as smart as his fans think. Look at his venture into Divix--what happened to that? It was crushed by the market. How is anyone going to watch Star Wars II in fifty years when all the tapes have turned into little pile of rust?
I shoot film almost no video. Film has many qualities that DV doesn't have like slow motion. Even Sony can't deny that their new 24 frame progressive scan camera lacks features that a 25 dollar Filmo off ebay has. DV is here for a bit--who knows how long. Film will be here forever.
